Many of my single friends believe that if only they could find the perfect guy, their lives would be perfect. Because I am a true advocate for online dating, I always recommend that they try to find someone via the Internet. But I also realized that no matter what path you take to meet the man or woman of your dreams, you will not find the perfect partner until you feel good about yourself. I know there are millions of self-help books out there that discuss this very issue. The sheer number of books available on this topic goes to show you that there is something to it. You MUST feel good about yourself first. How can someone else like you if you do not like yourself? Romantic movies, books, and television shows have us believe that it is possible for someone to come along and sweep us off our feet and make our unhappy lives happy and perfect. This is a fairy tale of the worst kind. If you get sucked into that type of thinking, you are in for great disappointment. The truth is you have to be responsible for finding your own happiness. No one else can make you feel good about yourself; it must come from within. Sure, if you’re dating a great guy and he treats you well and flatters you and gives you a large amount of attention, you’re going to feel pretty good. Temporarily. You cannot rely on another person to help you be happy. It’s not fair to the other person because eventually he will disappoint you, you will blame and resent him for the disappointment, and there goes the relationship. If you are feeling content with who you are as a human being; if you like yourself and feel that you are ready for a relationship simply because you don’t want to be alone anymore, then it’s definitely time for you to try and meet someone either in person or through online dating. But if your only motivation to meet the man of your dreams is because you think he’ll make you happy or he will change your life, or rescue you from yourself, then you’re in for a huge disappointment. If you’re in despair and wanting to escape your own life, the worst thing you can do is begin a new relationship.
